THE IMPORTANCE OF EXERCISE.....
So they say ...
People with autism are four-time more likely to develop depression.during adolescence and young adulthood.
Why are depression rates higher in people with autism????
We all have stress in our lives, we all have sadness, loss and disappointment at times. We also know nothing last forever, and things will get better.. But we don't have autism.
Cognitive rigidity is often seen in people with autism. This phenomena is the inability to mentally adapt to new demands or information. Autistic people sometimes struggle with flexible thinking. The inability or unwillingness to try something different to get the desired result.
Autistic people sometimes struggle with social interaction. They may not understand social cues, and are sometimes are very blunt .They sometimes say things that you or I may think but never say !!! Autistic people are sometime socially isolated .
They may have difficulty expressing their emotions. They may not be able to convey why they are struggling , what is making them sad , or why they are anxious?
When people are depressed they often seek therapy to talk about their feelings . Imagine having feelings you don't understand. Imagine not knowing how to express what you are feeling. Imagine not being able to communicate because you cannot describe what you feel. IMAGINE THE ANXIETY THAT CREATES.
It's so important for all of us to find ways to handle anxiety and stress. Life is stressful !!!!!!!
Exercise is a great way to reduce stress.....
Exercise is good for a person's physical and mental well-being. Exercise also contributes to brain function and learning.
Exercise or movements that elevate your heart rate allows your body to release neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters control mood, motivation ,learning, and focus. They give you a sense of well-being.
Low or lower levels of these neurotransmitters are associated with autism and adhd.
Neurotransmitters
Dopamine
Dopamine influences emotions . It plays an important role in the brains reward center. Dopamine also effects a person's motivation and drive . Dopamine also effects learning and memory.
Norepinephrine
Norepinephrine is also very important. It is a key component in how a person stress response. Our body's stress response determines how we react to challenges and threatening situations. When you exercise the body's production and release of Norepinephrine increases.
Physical activity stimulate the nervous system and norepinephrine is released. This release gives us a feeling of well-being which can help improve symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Serotonin
SEROTONIN helps regulate sleep and appetite.
Endorphins
When we exercise our body produces ENDORPHINS Endorphins are the bodies natural FEEL GOOD chemical.
The endorphins produced during exercise also act as a natural pain killer .This reduction of discomfort can help you push through an activity you enjoy.
Running, swimming and dancing are particularly effective for releasing ENDORPHINS.
The desire to exercise can be a challenge, so finding something you enjoy is key. Understanding the short and long term benefits of exercise can give you that extra push needed to build lasting success.
