HYPOSENSITIVITY & SENSORY PROCESSING DISORDERS

Sensory processing disorder is a condition that effects how the brain processes sensory information ( stimuli) . Sensory processing disorders can effect one or more of your sense.

There are alot of pieces to the sensory processing disorder puzzle. So lets focus on one piece at a time. 

In this entry we will look at hyposensitivity also referred to as sensory under responsivity. 

 

Hyposensitivity is defined as low or diminished response to stimuli.  So what does that look like in life, and what does it look like for a person with autism. 

People with hyposensitivity issues experience and underwhelming feeling to stimuli. Resulting in a constant need to look more sensory stimulation. 

Hyposensitivity symptoms can be in seen sound, sight,smell, balance. 

A person's behavior helps us recognize SPD . 

Auditory hyposensitivity refers to a lack of stimulation to sound. 

Auditory symptoms may include :

No response to name being called several times

Turning volume up to maximum levels 

Requires repeat directions to do a task 

Olfactory hyposensitivity refers to smell.It is revealed as high tolerance and under responsiveness for smells.

Olfactory symptoms may include:

1. Craving for foods with a strong smell   

2.High threshold for unpleasant smells 

3. People with olfactory hyposensitivity go out of their way to smell thing. They may even attempt to smell a person's hair or skin.

Visual hyposensitivity relates to what we see and how we process it . 

Symptoms of visual hyposensitivity may include: 

1. Trouble with puzzles and words 

2. Difficulty locating specific items among           other items 

3.Issues with tracking items visually

So what can be done to improve hyposensitivity????
